rewrites

As it stands, I have no policy to allow a rewrite of any of the essays for this course.

Should I initiate a policy?

What should it look like?

Convince me.

I agree that rewrites should be allowed. Maybe we could take the best 4 out of 5 papers. Those with grades they are comfortable with won't have to write the fifth paper and those with unsatisfactory grades will have a chance to redeem themselves.

I too have had professors who allow you to "throw out" the paper with the lowest grade. We should still have to complete four papers and be graded for four papers, but if we do a fifth paper it would make sense to take the best four out of five for our grade.

I agree that a 5th paper could be permitted. I, for one, will probably only write 4, but anyone who wishes to do additional work should be allowed to do so. I like the idea of throwing out the lowest score of the 5 papers.

I think that at least one rewrite should be allowed, simply because every teacher has there own expectations on how and what should be on a paper. Sometimes it can be a matter of trial and error. To have the option to rewrite a blunder shaves some of the anxiety and pressure off. Even taking 4 out of 5 papers will take off some of the edge.
