Update on Missing women

Here's a recent editorial by Armatya Sen on the missing women issue. He's updating for changes between 1990-2003. It's a short little essay, but the basic jist of it is this: progress has been made--considerable progress--on differential mortality rates. However, that progress has been almost entirely offset by an increase in gender-selective abortion. So, there are still about 100 Million women missing, but the reasons why have shifted.

I was saddened to learn that Chinese are using the technology to determine sex in order to decide upon abortion if the unborn baby is a girl. This simply seems unheard of in our country. Usually people are concerned about birth defects and use amniocentesis to discover abnormalities. Or else unltrasounds to discover if the due dates are correct by measuring the length of thigh bones, head, heart development, etc.
